India also withdrew its High Commissioner in Canada, Sanjay Verma, after strongly rejecting Canada’s allegations suggesting the involvement of Verma and other diplomats in the Nijjar murder plot.

India earlier said it had ordered the expulsion of six top Canadian diplomats, including the acting high commissioner, and said it had withdrawn its envoy from Canada, contradicting Canada's statement that it had expelled the envoy.

India's foreign ministry said in a statement that it had also summoned the top Canadian diplomat in New Delhi and told him that “the baseless targeting" of the Indian high commissioner, or ambassador, and other diplomats and officials in Canada "was completely unacceptable.”
