SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CN) — A bill that would empower the California Energy Commission to impose new oversight over gas refiners in an attempt to curb price spikes passed the state Senate on Friday.

By a 23-9 vote on Friday, California State senators advanced rules that could potentially cause higher gas prices across Nevada.

The proposal, backed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, would give energy regulators the authority to require that refiners keep a certain amount of fuel on hand. The goal is to try to keep prices from increasing suddenly when refiners go offline for maintenance.
