Fernando Tatis Jr. missed a little more than 10 weeks this summer because of a stress reaction in his left femur, an injury he believes might have stemmed from running around on the artificial turf of Gocheok Sky Dome in March.

Running onto the field, Tatis felt something he said he experienced only a few times during his pregame routine: goosebumps.

A loud cheer accompanied the announcement of his name with the Padres’ starting lineup. Then as the team took the field for the top of the first inning, he saluted fans in right field and smacked his glove in excitement.

Guess it worked. Merrill is back in the lineup for Sunday’s 1:10 p.m. first pitch, as is Fernando Tatis Jr. after a scheduled day off on Saturday. The Padres will continue to ease Tatis back into regular action after he missed more than two months.
